ABOUT THE BOOK
From Marly Youmans, author of the epic poem Thaliad (Phoenicia, 2012) comes the story of the mysterious Red King, the metamorphosing Fool, and the ethereal Precious Wentletrap, told in a series of connected poems of rare beauty. Whether read as fantasy, symbolic story, or simply poetry, the world Marly has created is a spellbinding place where we can glimpse truths about our own lives, and the world. The Book of the Red King is illustrated with drawings by the acclaimed Welsh artist Clive Hicks-Jenkins.
FROM THE AUTHOR
The Book of the Red King reflects my love of stories as well as poems; the series of poems focuses on tales of the Fool and his bond to the mysterious Red King and the pearly Precious Wentletrap. The alchemy of his inner transformation from desperate youth to a state more joyful and golden in nature is the soul of the book. Like my novels or my long epic adventure in blank verse, Thaliad, this account of the Fool is bent on propulsion and change. Like my collections of poems, the book is also made up of innumerable smaller pieces, though they (like the shards in a stained glass window) fit together to make something that strives after a wholeness that is rich, fantastical, and vivid with truth and beauty.
